After 1958 that model became known as the S&W Model 30.The finish is called as blue or blued and the grips look to be genuine mother of pearl (MOP)...very fragile and chip easily. Serial numbers for the .38 special Victory model began at about V1 in early 1942 and ran until VS811119 with a date of late August of 1945 (end of production). I a … read moreIf it is a pre model number gun then it can't be stainless steel since S&W didn't make stainless in a in the 50s. Could be nickel or a hard chrome finish. If it truely has no serial number there are legal problems with ownership as every S&W 38 Special that left the factory did so with a serial number. S&W has made millions of them (still in production) starting in 1899. A picture would help with value but depending on location and condition, $250-$400. Save the Second Amendment, take a kid shooting! .
